Trambust-Pàs

Progetto finalista per il concorso Milan Design District di @terravivacompetitions

curved lines meet the sharp, a nest halts the rush.

The TRAMBUST-PÀS project takes shape in the heart of Milan’s Isola district, aiming to create an apartment that tells the story of the city’s defining contrasts while offering intimacy and tranquility for a young couple of architects. At the core of the design concept lies the desire to translate the dual soul of Milanese life into the interiors: “trambust,” the symbol of daily frenzy and relentless urban pace; and “pàs,” the possibility to slow down, embrace conviviality, and enjoy a pause, echoing the essence of Italian dolce vita.

The interiors reflect this tension. Neutral, warm tones create an intimate backdrop, while more intense chromatic contrasts introduce strength and character. Geometries speak of opposites: soft, curved lines converse with sharp, broken ones, generating dynamic, unconventional spaces. Traditional materials coexist with innovative surfaces, balancing memory and contemporaneity. This material interplay captures Milan itself, where historic buildings alternate with visionary new architectures.

Two design rules connect all environments. Rounded-corner volumes protrude from ceilings, floors, or walls, defining thresholds and transitions. A striking red grid system, anchored via terminal connections marked by circles, establishes a strong visual identity. These grids serve multiple functions: sometimes as joints between structure and masonry, other times as lighting elements, hooks, or supports.

The volumes create a box within a box, a nest within the nest, maximizing protection. They interrupt flows and force a pause, a shelter. Everything else—the red grids and optical cones—projects toward the city, evocatively through vibrant colors and the definition of visual axes.

The spatial layout abandons conventional schemes, favoring discontinuous flows and fluid paths. The kitchen conceals a study corner, beneath which a small storage room is hidden. The living area becomes a hybrid space, where a large central block houses the bedroom and discreetly hides a spacious, functional walk-in closet. The bathroom’s ceiling window becomes a key feature in the entrance area. Extended into a volume, it illuminates both bathroom and corridor, offering natural light and the first moment of reconnection with nature upon returning to the domestic nest.

The project itself becomes a metaphor: a moment when time stands still, the hectic pace slows down, and the domestic space opens to sharing. In this sense, TRAMBUST-PÀS is not just an apartment, but a living experience offering an authentic representation of Milan and its contrasts.

Every element—chromatic, material, or spatial—engages in dialogue: trambust and pàs are not mere concepts, but design tools. TRAMBUST-PÀS tells the city’s story with simplicity and depth, balancing metropolitan energy with domestic sweetness.
